PIRATES OF LANIER POKER RUN 2015

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. What is this Boat Poker run thing all about?

Answer:
A boat poker run is an event where the participants go from one designated stop on the lake to another by boat. At each stop they will pick up a playing card until they have completed all of the stops and have five cards. When they return to Sunset Cove the poker hands are evaluated at the "Casino" then scored and the best poker hand wins the grand prize.
This year the cards will be in sealed envelopes and are not to be opened until the player returns to the "Casino". Our event is also "Pirate" themed and we give out trophies to the best "Pirate" dressed boats and crews. This will be our sixth year of having this event on Lake Lanier and each year it gets bigger and better.
The only purpose of the event, other than to have fun, is to raise money for the children in need in our area.

Q. Is your event "Kid" friendly?

Answer:
Yes it is. In fact we encourage everyone to bring their kids to enjoy the event as well. There will be entertainment, a great Laser Show, Fireworks and good food. If you are on a boat have them dress up as a Pirate, we would love to see them and they might win a trophy or plaque.

Q. I am from out of town. Where can my family and I stay?

Answer:
Our recommended place for you to to stay is at Lake Lanier Islands. They have hotel accommodations, Executive Villa Suites, and lake side cabins as well.
Additional lodging can be found at the Hampton Inn the Holiday Inn Express also please check the local hotel Guides at

Q. How do I get a boat slip during the event?

Answer:
Boat slips will be available at Sunset Cove on Lake Lanier Islands. After you have completed your event entry you will be sent a link and a "special" code to make dock slip reservations for the event..

Q. This is our first time at lake. Could you tell me a little about Sunset Cove and Big Beach, during the event? We can still tie up/raft out during the events at Sunset, if we decide to stay at Harbor Landing, correct? How long a trip is it from this marina to Sunset/Big Beach, by water? Walking? What is the law on golf carts?

Answer:
Sunset Cove and Big Beach are adjacent to each other and can be seen on Google Earth if you type in the address for Lanier Islands Resort. I take it you are docking at Harbor Landing because they offer water, power and long houseboat size slips. The 38 and the 47 would fit in one slip. If I'm wrong I suggest you rent a slip at Sunset at A,B,C,D or E docks, but no hook ups. Harbor Landing is a fairly short walk through a tunnel under the road to Big Beach and Gianni"s restaurant. A little further walk about 200 yards past Gianni's is the Sunset Cove restaurant and our Casino stage overlooking A, B and C docks. By water from Harbor Landing is all the way around Lanier Islands, call it about 4 miles. I suggest not driving the boat at night.
The Department of Natural Resources officers are out on the water at night and have no tolerance for DWI. As boats exit Sunset Cove Saturday night after the fireworks show, they have to idle out to the no wake markers and many times we've seen the blue lights come on as they just idle right over and start checking.
With that said, all the activities on land can be enjoyed by foot from Harbor Landing to Sunset. A lot of people, after playing their cards go back and sit on their boats for the fireworks show which can be seen from A,B,C,D and E docks, but not so well from Harbor Landing. Several hundred of us stay at Sunset Casino, watching videos of the day on the 25 foot screen, dancing and celebrating the winners just before the fireworks and continue til midnight. Lanier Islands rents golf carts that can be driven anywhere on the property, but not into Sunset or Big Beach, to the parking lots only.
The few that might bring their own carts may use them but the Islands management does say that their main road is capable of being patrolled by the local police and technically private carts should be street legal. There are many golf cart paths adjacent to the main road. Two people last year brought Rhino's and drove them acceptably and within reason on established paths. Unless you need power and water, I suggest renting slips on A-E docks, more fun.
Also, be aware, no alcohol may be carried from the parking lots to the docks at Sunset and Big Beach, so load your beverages aboard before you launch, however that does not apply for Harbor Landing, You may carry in and out of Harbor Landing. ..

No, there is not room at the hotel front entrance for boats and trailers, but there is room for trucks.

Q. I have a small boat that I would like to enter. How big will the waves be on the lake from the big boats in the event?

Answer:
We understand the issue, and as we have always said "Boating Safety is Our Utmost Concern", so we will be "staging" the boat starting times different for each class in the event. We will try and make sure that the fast boats and the big cruisers, the ones that make the waves will operate at different times, thus allowing the smaller boats a safe journey to each check point.

Answer:
Yes, Lake Lanier Islands, Lanier World has opened up their slip system for our participants this year. When you register for the event you will get a entry receipt detailing everything how to get a boat slip at either Big Beach or Sunset Cove.

Q. Last year the single boat ramp at Lanier Islands had a waiting line, is there another ramp close by before we take our trailers to the dedicated secure parking lot?

Answer:
Yes there are several but the closest is Holiday Marina and next closest is Big Creek boat ramp just back up the road you came in on about 1 mile, but there is no trailer parking there.

Q. Can I carry alcoholic beverages from boat off of dock OR from Sunset Cove Parking lot to boat at Sunset Cove docks?

Answer:
No, Lanier Islands does offer for sale food and drink at Sunset Cove but they do not allow you to bring your own, so LOAD ALL ADULT BEVERAGES ON BOAT FOR THE WEEKEND WHEN LAUNCHING AT BOAT RAMP!
